We doesn’t have count of cash printed after demonetisation : RBI

HYDERABAD: Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has revealed that they have no idea how much currency has been printed since demonetisation was announced. The RBI admitted this in reply to a query under the Right to Information Act filed by Mumbai-based activist Anil Galgali.

Some thing is wrong, as RBI is having adequate control, they can monitor and consolidate any information with a click of the button, they have been reporting this to concerned competent authority, taking their directives. One can not doubt the capability of RBI, but as far as RTI is concerned…they may not wish to disclose the sensitive information right now.

By looking at RBI response to RTI filled by activist Anil Galgali its clear the RBI is not in position to disclose the amount they  have printed so far, as if it comes out it may make people more disappointment for who are standing in ATM and bank queue for withdrawing their hard earned money.

When Anil filled an RTI about printing of 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 2,000 notes between November 9 and 19, RBI said it did not have the count of printed note during the period. “The information sought is not available with us,” RBI exactly said in RTI reply. On the base of RBI reply, Marri Shashidhar Reddy who is former vice-chairman of National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) wrote to the Election Commission last week on January 7, asking it to make the RBI part with the information.

The RBI refused to provide information regarding distribution of notes by banks from November 9 to 19, 2016. It refused to give the information referring to RTI Section 8 (1) (g) of RTI Act, 2005. This section is used when a information can be denied if the disclosure would endanger the life or safety of any person.

Using Section 8(1) g of RTI Act, 2005 for not giving the information is ” clearly shows that the RBI avoided giving the information,” said Reddy. In his letter to the EC he expressed the disappointment  and also apprehension that the ruling BJP could use the cash sent to various states to its advantage in the upcoming polls.

latter to EC, Mr Reddy also said, In reply to Galgali’s RTI query, RBI said bank notes were printed by Bharatiya Reserve Bank Note Madras (BRBNMPL) in Bengaluru and Security Printing and Mining Corporation(SPMCL) in New Delhi, and the query was sent to them. “Can it be that BRBNMPL and SPMCL print currency notes on their own without the knowledge of or orders from RBI? Nothing could be more absurd than this,” Reddy mentioned in latter to EC.
